Reverse Polarities @ The Hamilton Station

After a prolonged gestation, and increased expectation, Sydney hip hop crew Reverse Polarities – from the Big Village co-operative, and comprising members of the 2013 Australian Music Prize finalists Daily Meds – renowned for politically charged lyrics, rapid fire rhymes and high energy live performance have at last delivered their debut LP On The Contrary.

Kicking off the celebration was first single ‘BOSS’, an incredible showcase of fast paced, unrelenting double time flows, swapped seamlessly between the four MCs; a mere hint at an album that exhibits a diverse array of songs, ruminating on the varied social and political landscapes manifesting in the lives of the crews four members. Tackling themes such desensitisation to violence, teen road accidents, youth suicide and our country’s current stance on refugees, expressed lyrically over a soundscape of dark, heavy-hitting drum-soaked beats, these dire topics are then contrasted with lighter, humorous tales of overworked employees, intergalactic love songs and braggadocios rants, presented over the radiantly up beat and cheerfully auspicious sounds of production king Kit Complete, who not only MCs, but also handles beats and cuts for the entire LP.

Formed back in 2005, Reverse Polarities were quick to make an impact on audiences, performing countless gigs and cementing their name firmly as an act to keep an eye out for. After releasing their self-titled mixtape in 2008 to critical acclaim, P.Smurf, Mikoen, Mute MC and Kit Complete took a short hiatus to form groups such as Daily Meds, Mute X Roleo and Sweat Collectors. In late 2011 they reunited to create what is now officially the group’s debut album.

Submerged in a consistently turbulent political climate and with their debut LP On The Contrary out now through Big Village, Reverse Polarities are one group to look out for when it comes to passionate music directed at making a change for the better within our community, while not failing to engross, entertain and liven up listeners.

Australian Surf Movie Festival @ Lizotte’s

By popular demand second show added!

Tim Bonython’s independent surf movie tour initiative is back with the AMAYISM Australian Surf Movie Festival presented by GoPro tour in January - February 2014 with two incredible movies - The Journey and Encoded. Now in it’s 11th year the festival is touring Australia with up to 30 stops around the Australian coastline. Each venue provides a unique surf movie experience incorporating local businesses, surfers and music.

Tim Bonython’s previous film Immersion The Movie won two prestigious Awards at the 2013 New York Surf Film Festival held in New York last week, for Best Feature Film and Best Cinematography. Immersion The Movie was the only film to win two awards on the night. Director Tim Bonython talks about the AMAYSIM Australian Surf Movie Festival. “Each year I am searching for the greatest moments the ocean can offer. When it comes to surfers verses nature and the pure exhilaration of what the ocean can deliver, the Southern Hemisphere has the greatest playground of options on the planet. It’s seasonal but there’s always so many amazing options to surf and shoot.” “This year was again nothing short of wonderful experiences. We call the first half Wild Australia - The Journey, two of our experiences were with the King, Kelly Slater who had two windows of opportunity to join us.” “The first one was down to Shipsterns in Tasmania easily the best day ever there in years. Kelly mixed it up with Laurie Towner, Wade Goodall and the locals in perfect 15 foot sunny bomb waves.” “I invited Kelly to the desert coast with Californian Alex Gray & young up and comer Russ Bierke from southern NSW. As Kelly tells us “if the Great Whites don’t get you then the swarms of flies will.” Even though they survived the sharks & flies, Kelly and crew found some amazing waves in and around the dust.” “Two months later I headed back to that region that I have been politely naming on social media as ‘Spot X’, with Mark Mathews, Richie Vass & Ryan Hipwood. The guys are confronted by flies, big sharks & perfect slabs in a location known only to its devoted locals.” “Intermission of the show this year will include the amazing and generous traditional ASMF door prizes thanks to our associated sponsors and local supporting sponsors at each show. After intermission will be the Short Film competition winners of the 2012 AMAYSIM ASMF who have won the chance to have their film screened as part of the tour.” “The main feature film of this years AMAYSIM ASMF is called Encoded. It is part 3 of the Blackwater series about Teahupo’o. The Teahupo’o wave located on the south western side of Tahiti, is no doubt the worlds most dangerous wave and when its on, the best surfers want a piece of it.”

The 11th Annual AMAYSIM Australian Surf Movie Festival presented by GoPro tour is made possible thanks to our sponsors AMAYSIM, GoPro, Corona, Surfing World Magazine, Coastalwatch, House of Marley, Filtrate Eyeware Australia, The Surf Travel Company, Froth Surf Wax, Air Tahiti Nui, Surfdecals and Kirk Bierke Surfboards. These two movies will enthral, entertain & captivate you in every moment that was exclusively captured for your entertainment all on the Big Screen around Australia. Live acoustic music will be played this year by Newcastle local Jack Dawson

Wednesday 19th February

Kooyeah @ Lizottes

Kooyeh is on the last lap of the first leg of their national tour - even in the face of them being rendered homeless by the freak wild winds that swept the roof off the house they all live in together and was the same roof under which they recorded their album. This event even saw their house making breaking news while they were in the entertainment section! House troubles aside, Kooyeh are fast entrenching themselves in the minds of music fans who have been quick to get their groove at their live shows up and down the East Coast for their ‘Mountain Top’ tour that has so far been a knock-out success.

Kooyeh, the newest nine piece on the block, has traversed the Blue Mountains to Melbourne to record and release their debut album Soul Cleansing. Out now, Soul Cleansing has the music industry and fans alike ready to Cooee from the mountain-tops and get their reggae sway on. With a DIY home studio made from 20 mattresses and a walled mishmash of carpet that would make even the most relaxed landlord quake in their boots, Kooyeh have cultivated the kind of share-house work-life comraderie that has produced some of the worlds greatest acts and albums. Their live together, work together, play together attitude is reflected in their live shows, and audiences benefit from their synergy and their tight sound. Not a band to be easily labelled, their journey through reggae, soul, hip hop, dub and electronica keeps the group - and their growing crowds - on their toes. With four vocalists, a horn section and a skankalicious riddim section, Kooyeh deliver a high energy show that keeps the dance floor buzzing as the spotlight sweeps between each of the singers, the riffing horn players, funky organ, bluesy guitar, and all the while the driving force of the bass. Mountain Top is a nod to the band’s inception in the mountainous region of Katoomba NSW, before their mass migration to Melbourne. It was written about freeing yourself of the city for some relax time in their old backyard, about “something to get that shuffle in your feet”.
