Bridge To The Impact Of A Convict Past @ Lake Macquaire Art Gallery
Thought-provoking and poetic, the artworks featured in Felt Presence and a very fine river: convict stories from the Hunter respond to the extraordinary lives of convicts banished from their homeland.
In 1797, the Hunter River was described by Lieutenant Shortland as ‘a very fine coal river’ when he sailed into it searching for a boat of convict escapees. Soon after a convict camp called King’s Town was established and became notorious as a place of incarceration and hard labour. In a very fine river…, local artists Sophia Emmett, Ruth Feeney, Carolyn McKay, Tara Standing and Ryan Williams have responded to this important period in the history of Newcastle and the region. The exhibition, which in part addresses the impact of convict migration on the Aboriginal people, has been curated for the gallery by Rob Cleworth and Nicole Chaffey and the Aboriginal Reference Group was consulted during the development stages.
Further afield, Felt Presence, curated by Dr Ellie Ray, features work from Scotland, Ireland and Australia. Each of the artists has researched the fate of female convicts sent to Van Diemen’s Land in the mid-1800s. The artists delved into the stories and records of these convicts – some focused on their namesake, while others looked more broadly at events that affected them. The resulting artworks reflect varied responses – from the physical to the emotional, from presence to absence, from collective memory to personal memory – yet they all reside within an empathic space of a ‘felt presence’. Artists include; Tara Badcock, Anita Dineen, Anne Morrison, Claire Needham, Rosemary O’Rourke and Sharyn Woods, Irene Murphy, and Samantha Clark. The exhibition is a Devonport Regional Gallery exhibition toured by Contemporary Art Tasmania.
Exhibition dates: Felt Presence 25 July – 31 August a very fine river… 25 July – 19 October
