There’s a huge week coming up, crammed with great events and shows! - We know we say that every week but it’s true! There are lots of great events this weekend including the Afternoon Delight art show at King St, Winter Heat and also the Africa Today Festival.
As far as live music goes get to the Cambridge to see Busby Marou or if you’re inclined check out James Blundell at Lizzote’s for some Australian country classics. There’s plenty going on throughout the week too with trivia, cooking classes, and also big band style jazz!
Thursday 14th June
Think Rock n Food Trivia @ Lizzote’s
With food and wine tastings, accompanied by live music and loads of prizes Lizzote’s really have devised the perfect night out with their Think Rock n Food Trivia night.
Headlining the night will be Jason Hicks and Troy Henderson, a well established music duo having supported Missy Higgins, The Whitlams, Jet, Xavier Rudd and Human Nature.
After a short time apart the duo have reunited for their most exciting project yet, The Mix Tape, a layered mix of vocal harmonies showcasing their amazing vocal ability via the use of loop pedals.

Dan Potthast @ The Cambridge Hotel
It’s not often that a one man show is described as ‘exhilarating’ but Dan Potthast delivers with his onstage performance.
Known for his vocals in MU330, a ska punk band of the 1990’s, Dan is now better known for his live shows and fanatical fans.

Afternoon Delight @ The Supperclub, King Street Hotel
King Street is hosting a one off visual art exhibition featuring local talent; Sarah Mould, Sarah Louise Dunn and Sophia Flegg this Friday night.
Bought to you by Street Art Walking this exclusive event is inspired by street art with artists utilising mediums including silkscreen, aerosol, paper illustrations and installations.
Held in The Supperclub, King Street’s private lounge, this space has been transformed into a mini marketplace featuring prints, fairy floss, stencils, jewelry paper illustrations stickers, cupcakes and so much more.
Also featured on the night will be music by Chris Hearn (Alps) and a fashion runway by Emma Soup showcasing beautiful, locally made items.
There will also be a sneaky appearance by Nat from The Chop Shop Clinic and Alisha Hinds Art.
Organisers are promising an event that will admire and inspire with all items available for purchase using cash or EFTPOS.

James Blundell @ Lizzote’s
Known as the first young country artist to make an impact in mainstream pop charts, Australian artist, James Blundell, is playing at Lizzote’s tonight.
Responsible for turning a younger Australian demographic onto country music James Blundell, was the highest selling artist country artist in the nation for many years with double platinum, platinum and gold sales awards in addition to being the first Australian country music act to sign a major label recording deal in Nashville.
Aside from his own career James has also written for Lee Kernaghan, Slim Dusty, and Jimmy Little.

Busby Marou @ The Cambridge Hotel
The Busby Marou tour has come off the back of their first shows in the US and Canada as well as the success of their debut album titled, I Still Don’t Believe, and its deluxe re-package.
From humble begins the folk inspired pop outfit, Busby Marou, are having a serious impact here in Australia since recording their debut EP (The Blue Road) with Australian singer/song writing icon, Pete Murray and acclaimed producer Anthony Lycenko.
In late 2010 the boys were the only unsigned act on the ‘He Will Have His Way – Finn Brothers Tribute Album’.
Within a month of release and Busby Marou’s version of the Crowded House classic ‘Better Be Home Soon’ was spun on radio playlists across Australia and New Zealand and has been nominated for Triple J’s Hottest 100, together with an original track from their debut album, ‘Underlying Message’.
The duo and band have shared the stage with industry heavy weights; Powderfinger, Pete Murray, Tim McGraw, Alan Jackson, Dan Sultan, The Panics, Paul Dempsey, Archie Roach, Shane Howard and Art V Science.

Thom Pain (based on nothing) @ Newcastle Playhouse
Thom Pain (based on nothing) is a rambling monologue, as quirky as the name suggests, in which the protagonist recounts instances of suffering through a bee sting, a boy with a dog who died and his experience with a woman, which highlight his life long suffering.
Tagged, ‘he’s just like you, but worse’, Thom Pain (based on nothing) is an all-in-one stand-up comedy and character study featuring jokes that are as black as it gets.
Returning to his home here in Newcastle, director and Finalist in the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Tyran Parke has teamed up with Stooged Theatre for the first time to deliver the monologue which has received favourable reviews from both the New York Times and also the London Daily Telegraph.

Africa Today Festival @ Newcastle Leagues Club
The first annual Africa Today Festival will be held at Newcastle Leagues Club tonight in what will be a unique and high energy showcase of awesome African beats and rhythms.
Headlining the night will be a nine piece collective, Keyim Ba, joined onstage by a troupe of African dancers.
Bringing together several of Australia’s best West African Musicians, Keyim Ba excites audiences with their fusion of traditional, reggae, rap and funk supported by the guitar, percussion and the kora (West African harp).
“Praised for their outstanding musicianship and harnessing the explosive power of Guinean drumming, dance and song, Keyim Ba infuses the audience with an undeniable urge to move your body!” Anna Georgia, CEO of Free World Films.
As the first event of its kind in Newcastle, organiser Afro Moses promises the best in African music, dancers, as well as special African fashions.

L!vesites Winter Heat Festival @ Honeysuckle Promenade
The annual L!vesites Winter Heat Festival will be held in Honeysuckle this Saturday night featuring flaming sculptures, fiery street performances, pyrotechnics and light shows.
Organisers are encouraging that family’s rug up and bring their folding chairs, blankets, glow sticks, homemade lanterns and picnic baskets to the Honeysuckle promenade, near the Maritime Museum.
From 6pm onwards Honeysuckle will be alive with art, fire twirlers, performances by local band the Do Riders, and Ukastle Ukestra as well as fire performances by Carnivale D’Light.
As an initiative of The City of Newcastle and Hunter Development Corporation the L!vesites Winter Heat Festival is an alcohol free event.

Open Day @ Nobbys Lighthouse
Take in the undisrupted views of the Pacific Ocean from the grounds of Nobbys Lighthouse this Sunday.
As an architectural fixture in Newcastle’s maritime history it is open to the public on the 3rd Sunday of each month offering its visitors a unique view and the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the site.
After a comfortable 800m walk along the breakwall, finished with a steep climb to the actual grounds you can enjoy tea, coffee, and cakes as well as other light refreshments from the small onsite kiosk, alternatively you are also welcome to take your own supplies.
