Newcastle offers an array of excellent spots to head to on race day, whether you’re interested in the fashion, the drinks, the races or you’re just wanting to take the day off work…
The Burwood Inn
The newly renovated Burwood Inn at Merewether will be providing a 7 course tasting menu, beer or bubbles on arrival, live entertainment by Dane Fitzsimmons, tips from the track, sweeps, best dressed & best hat comps and best of all, it's only $70. Bookings essential.
Lizotte's
Lizotte's at New Lambton is offering a Melbourne Cup day with a bit of a difference. For $80 you get a delicious 2 course lunch with champange on arrival, fashions on the field, sweeps, the Cup live on the big screen and entertainment provided by the talented Mark Wells and Morgan Evans. No doubt tickets will see out quickly for this excellent event of food, music and a little racing so make sure you get in quick.
Silo Restaurant & Lounge
If you're looking to head down to Honeysuckle to enjoy the first Tuesday of November, head no further than Silo Restaurant & Lounge. Canapes on arrival and a first class menu, combined with beer, bubbly and plenty of giveaways all make for a top day down by the Harbour. Tickets for the day are $120 and include food, drinks and a $10 donation to charity. The event is extremely popular so get in quickly!
Newcastle Jockey Club
If Melbourne Cup day is more about the social scene than the races, the Newcastle Jockey Club is hosting the perfect event for you. For $85 you can spend the day down on the Club's lawn with DJ's, a game of croquet and of course the races on the big screen. Tickets include a 3 course meal and drink vouchers and are sure to sell like hotcakes.
Junction Hotel
For a day of fashion, fizz and frivolity, check out a Novocastrian favourite for Melbourne Cup day, the Junction Hotel. Starting with a glass of Moet or a Peroni on arrival followed by a ten course Tapas style lunch, a fashion parade, lots of giveaways and the races on the tele. Tickets are a bargain at $70 with pre-purchase being essential.
Bar Petite
If mood lighting, comfy lounges and a great wine list are your cup of tea, hand over $40 and head to Bar Petite. You'll get a glass of Hunter Valley bubbly, substantial canapes (always good when drinking bubbly), petit fours, a vantage point for the race, live music and prizes. Wear your best hat or tie! 11am - 3pm.
Delany Hotel
Head to The Del for an 11.30 start. Canapes and champagne on arrival followed by a 3 course meal, sweeps, TAB facilities and DJ's playing from 3.30pm till late make The Del a short priced favourite for your Cup day. Tickets $85.
The Albion Hotel
For $75 per person or $700 for a table of 10, head to the Albion Hotel to enjoy a 3 course lunch that includes all of your beverages. With best dressed prizes, a cup sweep and Kristi Bennett performing live after the big race, bookings will be essential!
Beach Hotel
Although there might not be anything formally organised for Melbourne Cup Day at the Beach Hotel, it is certainly a bit of a Cup Day institution. Sure to be packed, all the races will be shown on the big screen with full TAB facilities available for those looking to have a punt. Enjoy the views, soak up the sun and hopefully back a winner or two. Get in early!
The Brewery
For Melbourne Cup Day down by the Harbour, The Brewery is always a great option. This year for $120 per person, Nor'east will serve up a delicious 3 course meal with beverages served between 12pm and 3pm. Or head upstairs for $85 per person for drinks, nibbles, the races on the big screen and entertainment till late. Bookings are advised for either option.
