Parks for a Picnic in Newcastle
Although it’s chilly outside, everyone still needs to get out and about on the weekend to enjoy nature and get some fresh air! Picnics are the perfect excuse whether it’s for a date, a celebration or just a get together - be sure to check out this guide to picnic-worthy parks in Newcastle. The key items you can’t forget are wine, cheese, bickies, chocolate and a really big picnic blanket to stretch out in the sunshine.
Where is your favourite place to picnic in Newcastle?
King Edward Park
King Edward Park is definitely the most popular Newcastle park. Head down here any weekend and it will be bustling with picnics, parties and usually a wedding or two. The reason this is a Newcastle favourite is the spectacular views over Newcastle Beach. After your picnic be sure to drive around the cliff to really take in the view.
The Foreshore Park
The Foreshore park was once the spot for people to show off their 'hot rides' but now it has transformed into a lovely picnic destination. There is plenty of space to choose your spot without feeling crowded. Afterwards a walk to the lighthouse at Nobby's Beach or a few sneaky beers at the pub are a must. Custom's House and The Brewery are both nearby.
Civic Park
Civic Park is located directly across from Town Hall in Newcastle. This park features large fig trees, a beautiful fountain and is a bit quieter than the others. The close proximity to Darby St make it irresistible for a spot of shopping afterwards.
Gregson Park
Just down from Beaumont St in Hamilton, Gregson Park is a great picnic destination for all - there's plenty of room and tables around the kids' play area (they'll love climbing on the cannons at the entrance), and there's lots of other spots to settle down away from the hustle and bustle amongst the beautiful rose gardens.
Blackbutt Reserve
This is my absolute favourite place for a picnic in Newcastle, not only for the BBQs and great location but the wonderful wildlife you can go and visit after your picnic. The reserve has been developed so you can follow a path to explore the animal sanctuary including koalas, wombats and snakes! Very enjoyable for the littlies and grown-ups too!
And…Speers Point park! It’s on the water front and lovely for a gathering!
