Newcastle’s best desserts: Anything but Sugar Free
Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first. - Ernestine Ulmer.
Personally, I never miss dessert. A plate of sugary goodness following dinner is always welcome in my book. Being a poor student, my wallet only accommodates going out for a three course meal every blue moon. However, eating dessert out in Newcastle is a pretty sweet deal.
Newcastle is home to an array of hotspots for sweet toothes. I hope you’ve saved room for dessert. Here’s a map guide to Newcastle’s dessert menu from tarts to flamed pancakes.
Zinc
For their brownies. This place should win the Brownie of the Year award for their chocolate and coconut brownie. If you’re not a brownie fan, their dessert list is the most extensive that I’ve seen in Newcastle.
Il Grifone
For their Crespelle. If somebody is serving flamed pancakes - I’m there. Crisp, thin pancakes dripping in flamed orange liqueur sauce. Il Grifone assaulted my waistline, but made peace with my tastebuds.
Longworth House
For their Chocolate Mocha Tart. I wish I could eat this every night of the week. Gooey chocolate and a hint of mocha brought together in the perfect tart base.
Gourmet Goose
For their cake tasting plate. A platter of tiny cake morsels to tickle your tastebuds. Best shared with a fellow sweet toothed friend.
Sweet Poison
For edible masterpieces. If you’re after the Mona Lisa of the cake world, Sweet Poison is the place to go. There’s no particular stand-out dessert here - everything at Sweet Poison is to die for.
Euro Patisserie
For their Key Lime Tart. If you’re a after subtly sweet desserts rather than a something dripping with chocolate, Euro Patisserie's Key Lime Tart is perfect.
The Banyan Tree
For their Black Rice Pudding. Despite being the ugly duckling of desserts, black rice pudding is a Balinese dessert favourite.
Max Brenner
For hot chocolate and Tutti Fruity Belgian Waffles. Chocolate waffles are a tricky dessert. Often you end up with a lake of chocolate and a waffle island sitting on your table. Max Brenner have managed to maintain an optimum chocolate to waffle ratio. The waffles are crunchy and there’s just the right amount of chocolate and fruit.
3 Monkeys
For brownie pieces and ice cream. If there’s a lot of space left in your stomach left after dinner, head to 3 Monkeys for one of the biggest, richest desserts in town. A whole bowl of brownie morsels, ice-cream, chocolate sauce with whipped cream will ensure you don’t go home hungry. Note: not one for the lactose intolerant.
Estabar
For Chocolate Affogato. Mouth-watering gelato, shot of Spanish chocolate and Newcastle beach all together? Yes please! Hazelnut gelato and Spanish chocolate makes for the perfect afternoon delight.
Max Brenner, 3 monkeys and Estabar seem a bit lost on the map, they’re appearing in Birmingham Gardens!
Thanks a bunch. All fixed
the ‘spanish donut’ at Bocardos is wicked - dipped in a mini hot chocolate it is divine!
If you’re after something interesting, bit of a wow factor and a little on the gastronomic side of things, Bacchus is where it’s at!
