FREE can still mean fun and you might just be surprised at what there is to do without reaching into your wallet. So here is our list of the Top 5 FREE things to see and do in Newcastle:
The Bathers Walk
Start your day with a walk along the iconic Bathers Way, the five kilometre stretch of walkway that leads from Nobby's Lighthouse all the way to the Merewether Ocean Baths. You don't have to walk the entire length of the path to take in the scenery of our beautiful coastline but while exercising in such glorious surroundings, you could quite easily lose track of just how far you've travelled.
Merewether Ocean Baths
After working up a sweat from the Bathers Walk, make sure you have worn either your boardshorts or bikini and finish off the morning with a relaxing swim at the Merewether Ocean Baths. The Baths are the largest in the Southern hemisphere and are the perfect place to cool off and wind down on one of these warm Spring days.
Visit the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery
If exercising isn't your thing and something indoors is more likely to take your fancy, then head to Laman Street to have a wander around the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery. Housing the works of artists such as William Dobell and the late Margaret Olley, the Gallery is the perfect venue to immerse yourself in some of the finer aspects of the city. At present, the gallery has three exhibitions on display including the first major showing of the work of painter Euan Macleod.
Visit the new, Newcastle Museum
After a change of location and a $23.5 million development, the Newcastle Museum is back in business at its plush Honeysuckle surroundings along Workshop Way. Showcasing a wide range of cultural, educational and entertainment programs, the museum is an excellent destination for those young, old or anywhere in between.
Sunshine and Live Music at The Prince of Wales
A Newcastle institution, The Prince of Wales Hotel is a perennial favourite on a sunny, Springtime afternoon. With live music played from 6pm each Sunday, grab a glass of water and head out onto the upstairs verandah to watch the sun go down on another lazy day.
The Olive Tree Market is a perfect day out - 1st sat of every month. Over 100 quality artisan, design and craft stalls direct from the maker and ALL handmade! Great food and entertainment too.
