A Guide To The Best Greengrocers In Newcastle
Everyone’s heard of the benefits of healthy eating but it doesn’t stop at adding vegetables to your Thai stir fry. Getting all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to be healthy is not as hard as you think. While it is true that most of the larger supermarket chains do carry a select range of fresh produce, due to the distance the produce has to travel to get to your kitchen, it can become damaged and well on its way towards it’s used by date before you even take it home. And not to mention the arguments for the harsh toxins that exists in supermarket produce these days…
Here’s a guide to help you find some of the best suppliers of locally grown, sustainable and organic fresh produce that Newcastle has to offer. Whether you’re looking to get in shape this summer, planning on being a little more green or, (like me) are well in need of a detox, this is the best place to start.
Newcastle City Farmers Market
The Newcastle Showground on most Sundays is home to the Newcastle city farmers market that has some amazing fresh and locally produced food and other gourmet products. You’ll be able to find a delicious array of boutique wines, fresh breads, pasta, meats and seafood. The market also features a huge collection of art and craft stalls, jewellery makers, painters, photographers and other artists.
Organic Feast
Organic feast is a great specialty store that features your really hard to find certified organic grocery products. If you can’t find it anywhere, chances are you’ll find it here. Even if there’s something that they don’t stock, just ask one of the friendly staff and they’ll try to order it in for you!
Growers Best
Grower’s Best is a pretty large sized grocer in Newcastle situated next to the new Marketown shopping centre. This well known greengrocer features some of the freshest local produce around and is known for its excellent array of gourmet selections and breads. Open from 9 till 5 every day.
Hunter St Markets
The Hunter Street Markets are held every week from Wednesday to Saturday. The selection of stores vary from day to day including organic fruit and veg, fashion, jewellery, cakes, flower, and great hot food.
Hunter Organic Foods
Situated in the beautiful beachside suburb of Merewether, Hunter Organic Foods goes a little further than just being a great greengrocer. As the names implies, this is the place to go to find some of Newcastle’s best organic produce. Not only does Hunter Organic Foods supply great cheese and greens, but also stocks a variety of organic and green meat, poultry and cleaning products. Hunter Organic Foods carries a wide range of products for those with special dietary needs including gluten free, vegan and vegetarian.
I’d also add Earth’s Organic Garden, a new fruit and vegie (and groceries) shop in Islington, 100 Maitland Road.
I love it!
It’s a new venture by the owner of Sunny’s (which, I believe, has also changed names to, perhaps, Earth’s Organic Garden cafe?).
