5 Great Jazz Nights in Newcastle

Bar Petite is a quiet sanctuary away from the hustle and noise of King Street full of antique decor and a great atmosphere, providing the perfect space for an afternoon of top shelf tunes & liquors. In December, you can catch Adam Miller & Holly Clayton each Friday evening from 6 - 9pm or check out Summer Sundays with Pete Bottaro from 1 - 4pm. While you’re there you should check out the cocktails and expertly selected array of local and imported wines.

Tuesday night is jazz night at The Underground at The Grand Hotel with local and international acts with serious wow-factor providing tunes from 7:30 - 11pm. The night is presented by Newcastle Improvised Music Association (NIMA) and entry is $10.

The Great Northern Hotel plays host to a wide array of live musical acts each week, so is a good bet if you're looking to check out a band. Every Thursday night belongs to jam night Jazz Factory. Led by an amazing house band, head along to see (or be one) musicians join them on stage. There's a free meal up for grabs each week for the night's most popular performer.

The award-winning Old George and Dragon Restaurant also hosts live soft jazz music every Thursday Night, with cocktails of course. Music is by the incomparable JJ King, who has an easy listening jazz-based style and vast repertoire. Bookings can be made for two or more so gather your friends together for a classy night of fine food and great live music. The Old George & Dragon also prides itself on providing Australia’s best French-European cuisine and offering a selection of over 200 varieties of local and overseas wines.

Located under the Adamstown Uniting Church, The Dungeon Jazz is dedicated to presenting the finest jazz musicians in an intimate setting. The Dungeon prides itself in providing opportunities for both up and coming young jazz musicians and local bands and has developed ‘Discovery Gigs’ that allow individual musicians the chance to jam with a professional group and ‘Jazzcomp’ where amateur musicians and bands compete for prizes. The Dungeon holds regular gigs on the first Thursday of every month along with plenty of other shows and concerts scheduled throughout the year.
