The 25th of April every year marks the anniversary of the Gallipoli landing in 1915. More than just another awesome day off, it’s a day to remember all those Australians who have served in conflicts and peacekeeping operations. It’s also a day about mateship, sacrifice, and paying respect to our veterans. So grab a Kiwi (if you can find one) and get up early for a crammed packed day off! This year we’ve comprised the perfect guide to find your way around this years Newcastle ANZAC day.  From the Dawn Service memorial service, ANZAC biscuits & 2Up, you wont’ be lost for things to do and see!

Nobby's Beach Dawn Service

Nobby's Beach Newcastle East

Start the day with the traditional dawn service which is scheduled to begin at 5am and will include a band, choir, bugler and bagpiper. The service will include a walk to Fort Scratchley to conclude at approximately 6am with a four-gun Salute to the Fallen. As a tradition there will be a full blackout before the service so bring a torch and some wet weather gear!

Hunter Street March

Hunter Street Newcastle

Marchers will form up in the Hunter Street Mall and side streets between Perkins & Newcomen Streets Newcastle. The march will step-off at 9.15am and proceed west along Hunter Street, turn left into Darby Street, right into King Street and finish in Civic Park. Road closures will be in place along the route to ensure the safe passage of the parade Vehicle access to and from properties along the march route will not be permitted during the road closures. Residents or businesses are advised to move their vehicles before the closures take effect.

The Newcastle Anzac Day United Commemoration Service will be held at the cenotaph in Civic Park commencing at 10am. The wet weather venue for this Service is the concert hall in City Hall.

Poppies @ The Newcastle Museum

A field of remembrance at the Museum on ANZAC Day The Newcastle Museum will honour the lives of the men and women lost in war by creating a field of crosses and poppies this ANZAC Day. Around 250 crosses and 750 poppies will carpet the lawn between the Museum and Civic Railway Station. A special feature of the new Museum is the display of Last Remains in Newcastle on the World Stage. Visitors are encouraged to write the names of people they wish to remember on notes and leave them on our wall of remembrance. These names have been collected and will be displayed on the Museum Poster Pole. The Museum will be open on ANZAC Day. Fresh Museum ANZAC biscuits will be available for sale throughout the week of 24 to 29 April. Copies of the recipe will be available for free.

Tour the tunnels @ Fort Scratchley

Fort Scratchley will participate in the dawn service at Nobbys Beach with traditional firing of the 6" Guns at the completion of the service in memory of the ANZACs, Navy, Army and Air Force. The Fort will then open its gates at 12.00pm with the following activities scheduled: 12.10pm - Modified tunnel tours commence; $8.00 adults, children free of charge 1.00pm - Firing of the 6" Mk VII Guns 2.00pm - Firing of the 6" Mk VII Guns 3.00pm - Tunnel tours conclude 4.00pm - Gates close
