Scared about the looming end of holidays meaning time to get back into school or Uni work? Or just need to get out after going a little stir-crazy in the offer? Help take your mind off things with some of the many events and happenings in Newcastle this week. Here’s a few that may just take your fancy…

Friday, 27 January

Renowned for their encapsulating stage presence, catchy melodies and spine tingling harmonies, Newcastle locals Sunday Records are playing tonight at Merewether’s Mary Ellen Hotel. Perfect for a night of easy listening! With a wide range of genres covered in their live sets, the 3-piece pop/rock band have been known to cover tracks from Bon Jovi to Lady Gaga. Playing from 9pm-midnight, head to the Mary Ellen for a great night with great tunes, and also revel in the $4 Friday specials ($4 for all tap beer, champers and house wine). More information.

Want to take a step back in time? Well the Wonderdome in Foreshore Park is giving you the chance tonight, when it hosts The Hot Society Bootleg Ball and Legitimate Speakeasy. Get into your best 1920’s outfit (and attitude) and head down to the Foreshore from 6pm. There will be cabaret, a live band, a cocktail bar featuring the best hooch from The Clarendon Hotel, gambling & roulette plus plenty of Gangster’s, Flapper’s & Moll’s! Presented by Livesites, Phantasia, The Geodesic Gentlemen and NIMA, this is an over 18’s only event with tickets just $35 (which are available from here).

Sydney indie piece, Chicks Who Love Guns, are set to play at the Great Northern Hotel tonight from 9pm. With free entry, angsty adolescent tunes and great location, why not head down this Friday evening?

Saturday, 28 January

Best known as the guitarist and singer for Cold Chisel, Ian Moss will be serenading guests at Lizotte’s Newcastle tonight! With tickets starting at $50, he will be supported by Israel Cannan and it will be worth every sent. More information and bookings.

Harddance Newcastle kicks off it’s 2012 series tonight at The Cambridge Hotel in the Glass House. Set to be Australian themed, continue your Oz Day well and truly into the weekend with the best harddance music complete with a beach shack DJ booth & all! Entry is cheap at $10 and are available from here.

Sunday, 29 January

Like most weeks, the Newcastle City Farmers Markets are on from 8am-1pm, bringing you the freshest local produce. Newcastle’s Farmers Market brings together local farmers and producers to create an array of delicios foods and there are also a range of artisan stalls selling quality goods. It’s a great way to begin a lazy Sunday. More information.

Reigning from Rockhampton, rock duo Busby Marou are playing at Newcastle Lizottes tonight. Hitting the town on their coastal tour with Georgia Fair, the pair have set tongues wagging with their rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ on Triple J’s Like a Version, as well as appearances on Rockwiz & a number of music award nominations. Wednesday, 1 February

Friday, 3 February

Melbourne folk band The Paper Kites are hitting Newcastle tonight & playing at the Great Northern Hotel! After tours with Josh Pyke & Boy & Bear, they are bringing their soulful sounds to the eyes & ears of Newcastle. Tickets are available now for just $15.30, and opening on the night at 8pm. This is an over 18’s event.

Blues/acoustic/rock band Coristone will be appearing tonight at The Cambridge Hotel from 8pm. After 18 months break from the gig scene, they are set to be back in full force with support from The Big Empty, Sydney based Age of Menace & level 8! Click here to purchase tickets.
