This Week in Newcastle: Music, Art & a Little More Music
With the weather forecast to be warm and sunny over the next few days, it’s time to get out and make the most of this beautiful Newcastle Springtime. Luckily, there is plenty happening around the region so here’s a list of gigs and events that might tickle your fancy!
Friday, 16 September
Glenn Richards of Augie March and Dan Luscombe of The Drones have joined forces for a special show tonight at Lizotte’s in Lambton. The pair will take the stage without a set list, preferring instead to play both what they feel like and what the audience asks for. How cool is that! There aren’t too many tickets left so get in fast. For more details, visit the Lizotte’s website.

Saturday, 17 September
The Wollombi Music Festival is back bigger and better than ever for its second year with Benjalu, Rachael Brady, Watussi and Wollombi Radio just some of the acts to grace the stage today. The festival isn’t solely about the music with film, markets and art all showcased throughout the day as well as a spot for the kids to be entertained and a drumming workshop will be put on by some of the performers. Tickets to this excellent event can be pre-purchased online for $80 (which includes a campsite for the night) or $100 on the day. The event is limited to just 500 people so visit the website to see if you can still pick up a ticket.
If you’re looking for something a little closer to Newcastle, ARThive is currently running an exhibition entitled A Vintage Dream. Showcasing the photography of two local artists, the exhibition runs until 24 September. Details.
If you’re out in the Hunter Valley, head to First Creek Wines to help them celebrate their 10th birthday, and that they picked up the Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year Award. Today from 10am there’s a free sausage sizzle, tours of the winery and wine masterclasses, and a similar deal on Sunday. More info.

With perfect weather forecast for Sunday, why not forget about cooking brekkie at home and head out to any number of our city’s excellent breakfast spots. Whatever might happen to tickle your fancy, Newcastle’s cafe scene will be able to cater for your cravings. If you’re stuck on where to go, why not read our article on the best brekkie spots in town.
If you haven’t checked out the Hunter Valley Gardens Festival of the Flowers, why not head up to the Hunter Valley today? Head up at 11:15am, 11:45am or 1:30pm and you can join in a stroll around the gardens and a drawing class with Adrienne Crouch. Monday, 19 September
If you’re still hungry after your Sunday breakfast and a night spent in the kitchen doesn’t sound too appealing, head into the Delany Hotel on Darby Street for their Monday Chicken Schnitzel night. For $9.90 you’ve got a choice of sauces to go with your schnitzel and you could even combine this with the pubs Monday Trivia night. A deal so good, it’s cheaper than cooking!
Tuesday, 20 September
The Underground at The Grand Hotel will again host an intimate night of jazz, courtesy of NIMA. Tonight audiences can enjoy music from the Carl Morgan Trio, with Carl on guitar, Alex Boneham on bass & Ben Vanderwal on drums. Head to the corner of Bolton and Church Sts, Newcastle from 7:30pm - 11pm, entry is $10.
Wednesday, 21 September
The Cambridge’s student night, Antics takes place each Wednesday night. Tonight you can see Greenthief, The Karma Cops and Riley & Donna. $3.50 drinks and free pool from 8.30pm.
Thursday, 22 September
Yes, he Cut’s Like A Knife and enjoyed the Summer of ’69 but he is still touring, and tonight he’s at the Civic Theatre. Bryan Adams comes to town as part of his Bare Bones tour where he will play all his hits in a special acoustic setting. With 65 million albums sold worldwide, fans will relish to see such an intimate performance. Tickets can be purchased from Ticketek but get in quickly!
Friday, 23 September
Perth based four piece Eskimo Joe come to Newcastle’s Bar On The Hill tonight to play all their classics as well as songs from their new album Ghosts of The Past. Tickets can be purchased a number of ways and start at $38. For more info, check out the Bar On The Hill website.
