It’s set to be a busy week in Newcastle with a stack of live music, a little bit of art, Halloween and of course, Melbourne Cup day! So sit back and relax as we pick out a few of the events and happenings around town that might take your eye…
Friday, 28 October
Kick off your weekend tonight at Lizotte’s with Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson playing a solo, acoustic gig. The man behind songs such as Chemical Heart and Hard Act To Follow will play stripped back version of all the Grinspoon hits. Supported by St Cecilia, tickets for dinner and the show are $77. The Odditorium Vintage store in Thorn Street, Newcastle is having a Halloween Party tonight. Starting at 6pm, the free event will have a BBQ, wine, beer and also showcase the opening of their new exhibition entitled ‘Nocturnal’. Music on the night will be provided by the Luke Hoskins Inexperience who will be sure to take you down to funky town. The dirty punksters Video Nasty and also Casio Gloria. Saturday, 29 October
Local favourites Little Blak Dress are back in town tonight to play at the Cambridge Hotel. With a reputation for high energy shows and a sound not to disimilar to The Rolling Stones and The Strokes, the boys hit the stage at 8.30pm. Tickets for the gig are available from Moshtix.
With more than 65 million albums sold worldwide, Def Leppard return to Newcastle tonight to play at the Entertainment Centre. Their epic live show and huge arsenal of hits have become synonymous with their name, leading Def Leppard to be heralded as an institution in both the music and touring industry. Sunday, 30 October
Bar Petite at the top end of town is the place to be on a Sunday afternoon with Summer Sunday’s kicking off from 12 noon. Enjoy beer, wine, cocktails, asian inspired dishes and groovy tunes in a beachside setting that will make you think you’re in Phuket or Pattaya. With love jazz between 1pm-4pm and lounge beats from 4pm-7pm, it sounds like the perfect spot to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.
The last Sunday in October sees Hotel Delany turned into a little piece of Germany for Deltoberfest. $7.50 steins of German beer, $4 schnapps, $8 cocktails and DJ’s playing dance tunes from 4pm all make for an afternoon of fun. So get out your lederhosen and get on down there!

On the back of their new album Moonfire, Syndey based band Boy & Bear play at Newcastle Panthers tonight. If Halloween wasn’t your thing, or if you loved it and can’t wait to get dressed up again, don’t miss the Dia de los Muertos, that is Mexican Day of the Dead, gig happening at The Underground at The Grand Hotel tonight! Headlined by Bones Jones & The Skeletones (shameless plug - Ed.), the night will also feature performances from special guests including local favourite Zoe K, who has just announced that she’ll be performing at Woodford Folk Festival this year, as well as art by local tattoo extraordinaire Demi Iacopetta. There’ll be snacks, Mexican beer, face painting, and dressing up is highly encouraged. $10 entry. More info.

The University of Newcastle is celebrating the achievements of women through an exhibition entitled 1oo Women. The exhibition brings together the stories of women such as Susie Porter, the late Margaret Olley and Catherine Britt with these women reflecting on the changes they have seen during their own lifetimes. Held at the University Gallery, this inspiring exhibition can be viewed between 12noon and 6pm. For more details, visit the University Gallery website.
