This Week In Newcastle: Lots of Music, A Few Beers & Some Art
The sun is out (was, could be, come on!), the weather suitably warm and there just happens to be plenty happening around town to see and do this week! Here’s a few events and happenings that might take your fancy…
Friday, 18 November
If lo-fi, thigh high punk rock blues gets your engine running, don’t miss The Snowdroppers tonight at The Great Northern Hotel! You’ll be able to pick up their brand spankin’ 7″ single on vinyl (only available at these shows), and also catch a set by locals Kira Puru & The Bruise. Doors open at 8pm, tickets are available through Big Tix or on the door.
Gold Coast band Tijuana Cartel will be bringing their Afro-Cuban beats to the Cambridge Hotel tonight. Energetic and utterly delicious, the guys are returning to Newcastle to launch their brand new album M1. Tickets for the gig are $25 + booking fee and can be pre-purchased through Moshtix.
Head along to the Lass O’Gowrie for a huge night of music featuring 80’s inspired cover band Subdivision. Also on the bill tonight are The Machs, Kirsty Larkin & The Pocket Trap and Good Corn Liquor. Entry is FREE and it all kicks off from 8pm.
Saturday, 19 November

Well if you’re after a few dating tips, get along to Lizotte’s at Lambton today for How to avoid the psychopath…and other practical Dating Tips. The team at PODspace on Hunter Street, Newcastle are inviting you to come along and help them celebrate the opening of their new gallery space. Local artists Peter Speight, Simone Darcy, Michael Randall, Claire Martin, Emily Roberts, Ahn Wells and many more will be featuring their works at this exhibition supported by the Octapod. Straight To You, Triple J’s tribute to Nick Cave has been touring the nation and stops off tonight at Newcastle Panthers. Featuring Abbe May, Adalita, Lisa Mitchell, Dan Sultan and Kram, head along to see these Aussie artists tackle songs from this legendary artists collection. It promises to be a unique concert that you won’t want to miss. Tickets start at $59.40 + booking fee and are available at the Moshtix website.
The multi-award winning Afro Moses brings his tasty mix of hot rhythms to the Great Northern Hotel tonight. Passion, colour, energy and dancing are what to expect so don’t miss out! For more info about the gig, check out the Great Northern website.
Sunday, 20 November
Bar Petite at the top end of town is the place to be on a Sunday afternoon with Summer Sunday’s kicking off from 12 noon. Enjoy beer, wine, cocktails, Asian-inspired dishes and groovy tunes in a beachside setting that will make you think you’re in Phuket or Pattaya. With love jazz between 1pm-4pm and lounge beats from 4pm-7pm, it sounds like the perfect spot to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. For more information, visit their website.
Monday, 21 November
Newcastle Craft Beer Week kicks off today! This brand new event will see brewers from all over Australia converge on select Newcastle venues to showcase their offerings. Locals will have the the chance to learn about the brewing process, speak to the brewers themselves, and of course sample sample sample. Wednesday, 23 November
Seeker, Lover, Keeper, the collaboration between Sarah Blasko, Holly Throsby and Sally Seltmann will be playing a special show tonight at Newcastle’s Christ Church Cathedral. This unique trio are combining to tour the country and are playing at a number of historic settings. The rich acoustic sounds and otherworldly atmosphere of Christ Church Cathedral will combine for one hell of a show. At the time of writing, there are only a handful of tickets left so be sure to check the Ticketek site to see if there are any still available.
Perhaps one for the adventure lovers, the Banff Mountain Film Festival is dropping in to Newcastle’s Civic Playhouse tonight. You can see some of the most dynamic action sports films that have been audience-tested and programmed for maximum excitement. Tickets for tonight’s showing are priced at $33.50 and can be purchased through Ticketek.
Thursday, 24 November
2011 is the year that will see the end of a television institution, Spicks and Specks and the team plan on going out with a bang. Spicks and Specktacular – The Finale is a brand new production, loosely based on the music trivia show, putting Adam, Alan and Myf back on stage together with surprises, laughs, memories, live music and appalling choreography. The show starts at 7.30pm with tickets available through Ticketek.
