Another week, another bunch of things to do in Newcastle

Friday, 9 September

The Cultural Awakenings Festival wraps up today at the University of Newcastle with a Latin Dance Party. To find out more, take a look at our article from earlier this week containing details about this multicultural event.

Saturday, 10 September

Eight piece Melbourne outfit Eagle and The Worm head to Maitland’s Junkyard Hotel tonight to play tunes from their new album Good Times. Supported by fellow Melbourne band The Frowning Clouds, Eagle and The Worm are taking the Australian music scene by storm, with a most recent appearance on Triple J’s Like A Version added to their resume. Tonight’s gig is free so don’t miss out. It all kicks off from 8pm.

Tonight at the Depot on Beaumont you can catch the acoustic sounds of Joao Carlos Mendes. Book a table for dinner and make a night of it whilst listening to the soothing sounds of this Brazilian musician who plays an intimate set from 8.30pm.

Sunday, 11 September

The always popular Newcastle City Farmers Markets are on again. From organic fruits and vegetables to arts, crafts and delicious baked treats, the markets are held at the Newcastle Showgrounds. Car parking costs $2 and get in early to avoid the crowds. For more details, visit their website.

Head along to the Caves Beachside Hotel tonight to catch one of Australia’s more successful bands in recent years, Thirsty Merc. With hits under their belt such as Mousetrap Heart, Someday Someday and In The Summertime, the ARIA Award winning Brisbane outfit will be taking the stage as part of their Rock Ya Socks Off tour. Tickets are $30 and are available on the night.

Monday, 12 September

If you’re down in the dumps after one day back at work, head into the Hotel Delany for a bit of fun and their Monday Trivia night. With their weekly jackpot currently sitting at $450, it’s well worth heading in and putting your grey matter to good use.

Tuesday, 13 September

Celebrating and showcasing the creative talents of Hunter Tafe performing arts students, Mr Clegg’s Creative Industries continues tonight at the Civic Playhouse. The festival runs for two weeks with a different performance taking place each night. Tonight you can catch the play Personal Stories from 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketek and are $18.

Wednesday, 14 September

The Cambridge’s student night, Antics takes place each Wednesday night. Tonight you can see We Built Atlantis, To Kill a Sunrise and Ghosts on Broadway. $3.50 drinks and free pool from 8.30pm.

Thursday, 15 September

Newcastle’s feature race meeting of the year takes place today with the running of the Newcastle Gold Cup at the Broadmeadow race course. It’s set to be a huge day both on and off the track with great racing, fashions on the field and live entertainment. Tickets are selling quickly so get in early to avoid disappointment. More info.

Jazz musicians can get amongst it at The Great Northern’s weekly jazz jam - Jazz Factory. Head along to see some of Newcastle’s finest jazz musicians, and if you’re feeling game, you can even take the stage with them.

Friday, 16 September

Local lads Benjalu return to Newcastle tonight to play a one off gig at the Cambridge Hotel. With a 60′s and 70′s reggae/rock sound, the Newcastle lads have just been announced as part of the line-up for the end of year Peats Ridge Music Festival. There, they will perform alongside artists such as Gotye and Xavier Rudd. Tickets for the Cambridge gig are available through Moshtix and are a bargain at $13 with things kicking off at 8pm.

Nick Turner is a born & bred Novocastrian. At 21 years of age, he is in the midst of a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Newcastle, majoring in film, media & cultural studies. His interests include travel, golf, reading, photography, sport, food and watching Seinfeld re-runs. Nick is currently interning at Sticky.
