This Week In Newcastle: Live Music, Foreign Films & Food
With weather so damn nice, some might say you would be mad not to get out and about this week in Newcastle. There’s lots happening so here’s a few things that might take your fancy…
Friday, 14 October
Why not begin your weekend at the Wickham Park Hotel tonight with local band Milestones. Playing classic rock ‘n’ roll from the sixties and seventies as well as anything from the present day that has caught their ear, the band take to the stage at 9pm. Entry is free.
Celebrating the release of their latest single ‘Dun Proppa’, hip-hopsters Def Wish Cast are playing tonight at the Cambridge Hotel. Turning out high energy performances for over 20 years, the band kick things off at 8pm. Tickets for the event are $18 and can be purchased through Moshtix.
The Newcastle Italian Film Festival begins tonight at the Greater Union Cinema on King Street. The Festival is about celebrating the traditions and embracing Italy’s way of life through Australian eyes. Six films will be screened at this years Festival and it runs from today till Sunday. Saturday, 15 October
Livesites have yet another great event happening in Newcastle today with Classics On The Boardwalk taking place between 10am-4pm. Take along a chair and a picnic basket and listen to classical music down on the beautiful Newcastle Harbour. Entry is free and for more information, take a look at the Livesites website.
For something a little bit different and perhaps a little more cultured, the Imperial Russian Ballet comes to the Civic Theatre tonight. Three awe inspiring acts that feature highlights from some of the most recognisable ballets will be performed from 8pm. Tickets are avilable through Ticketek and start at $64.90.
Sunday, 16 October
The New Lambton Village Festival is on again for 2011. A cultural celebration of top notch food, unique market stalls and local fashion, as well as two stages of entertainment will all take place today starting at 9am. For more information about the Festival, check out their Facebook page.
Monday, 17 October
The Monday Night Music Club takes place tonight at Hamilton’s Northern Star Hotel. Starting at 8pm, it’s a free-for-all night so bring along your guitar, some (hopefully) smooth vocal skills and whatever else you might need to wow the welcoming pub crowd. Why not have a go!
Tuesday, 18 October
If the thought of coming home from work to prepare a gourmet meal isn’t exactly your cup of tea, why not let someone else do all the work for you. Tuesday nights at the Mary Ellen Hotel in Merewether sees their $11.90 schnitzel night. With a choice of toppings as well as sides, it is cheaper than cooking at home! And, why not hang around for some trivia where you can test your grey matter and, maybe even win their jackpot cash prize of $1,300. That sounds alright to me! Trivia starts at 8pm.
Wednesday, 19 October
If Weet-Bix and milk just isn’t doing it for you anymore, why not head out for breakfast this hump day. With this gorgeous Spring weather about, it is the perfect time to be up early enjoying the sunshine. Newcastle is home to a huge number of great brekky spots and there is always somewhere to please even the pickiest of eaters. Thursday, 20 October
If you’re looking for some great music to get you that little bit closer to the weekend, look no further than Lizotte’s at Lambton. Tonight sees the album launch for local lads Bob Corbett & The Roo Grass Band. With their folk/country style and amazing live performance reputation, this four piece are not to be missed. Heat 4 of the Bacardi Band Search is on tonight at the Cambridge Hotel. The competition unveils some great local talent and with huge prizes up for grabs, the bands will be fighting it out for a coveted finals spot. Tonight you can see The Lamplighters, The Broken Loose, Sunset Exodus & Floggin the Goods going head to head from 8.30pm. Entry is free.
Friday, 21 October
The Roost Creative plays host to the opening night of Fabricated, an exhibition that features art works and design that has been painted, printed, stitched, sewn or glued onto a fabric medium. The night starts at 7.30pm and entry is free. For a few more details about the night, visit their website.
