This Week in Newcastle: Father’s Day, Beer Tastings & Lots of Music

Well, Spring has officially sprung! Let’s welcome the warmer weather due over the coming months by getting out and about in Newcastle! Here are some upcoming gigs & events to keep you entertained this week…

Friday, 2 September

Treat your inner beer connoisseur and get along to the Little Creatures Beer Tasting at The Clarendon this evening. What a way to kick off the first weekend of Spring! Sample all the Brewery’s favourites between 5 - 8pm. FREE tastings! You can also buy tickets to the Clarendon’s Little Creatures Degustation Dinner taking place later this month.

After a tipple, you could venture across to Newcastle City Hall for a night of orchestral delights with Sydney Symphony. The orchestra will perform pieces by Brahms and Mozart. Tickets & more info.

You can also head along to see Architecture in Helsinki perform at the Bar On The Hill tonight. They’re on their national tour to promote their latest album Moment Bends. Tickets are available from the venue, The Rock Shop and online.

Enjoy the culinary offerings of some of the Hunter Valley’s finest chefs at the Chefs of the Hunter Masterchef Event at Peppers Guest House. You’ll get a 5 course degustation meal accompanied by Audrey Wilkinson Wines. The evening’s chefs are Michael Bolam, Head Chef Restaurant Sanctuary, Jean Marc Pollet, Executive Chef Mercure Resort, Paula Rengger, Head Chef Shakey Tables Restaurant, Troy Rhoades Brown, Head Chef Muse Restaurant and Cafe & Daniel Kibble, Head Chef 305 Restaurant and Cafe. Back in Newcastle at Bar Petite, Adam Miller & Holly Clayton will begin their Friday night residency. They’ll perform every Friday from 6 - 9pm. Adam will be playing his 8 string guitar, and Holly will be singing. Cool music in a cool bar.

Saturday, 3 September

For some unashamedly crude, rude and out of control Aussie rock, head along to see The Australian Beefweek Show at The Lass tonight. They’ve issued a maximum course language warning, so might not be one to take the kids or grandparents to. Kick off is 8pm & there’s two support acts.

Olive Tree Markets are on today, featuring entertainment from Zoe K. Check out some great local talent - arts, crafts & tunes from 9am - 3pm.

Sunday, 4 September

Want to give Dad a thrill this Father’s Day? Why not try tandem skydiving over Newcastle Beach? There are morning & afternoon dives. More info.

Wednesday, 7 September

Indulge and check out some local talent at Lizottes Newcastle tonight. Co-presented by local street press Reverb, each week Live n Local showcases some of Newcastle’s best. Tonight it’s Jade Gannon, Ben Webb, The Tillegra Damned and Gareth Hudson & The Arc Angels. Kick off is 7:30pm, entry is $15. Call (02) 4956 2066 to book.

The Cambridge’s student night ANTICS is on tonight. Check out Savage Track Record, Vulture Culture & We, The Keen. Free entry, free pool and cheap drinks. Kick off is 8:30pm.

Thursday, 8 September

Whether you can play or not, it’s worth checking out The Great Northern Hotel’s weekly jazz jam night, Jazz Factory. Jump up on stage with the stellar house band or take a back seat and watch Newcastle’s jazz talent come out & play. Kick off is 7:30pm. Free entry.

Saturday, 10 September

Head along to The Bradford Hotel in Rutherford to check out what may well be the most authentic & best surf rock band in the land - Flash Sheedy & The Instromatics. It’s showmanship of the ’60s and you’ll hear classics like Caravan & Apache. Free entry.

Newcastle Community Arts Centre is having a day of open studios. This will be NCAC’s 4th Annual Open Studios Day, when all 29 studios will be open to the public from 12 - 4pm. This is an opportunity to see what is behind closed doors, and meet emerging and established artists. You can also purchase directly from the artists from the selection of visual arts, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, crafts, jewellery, design, documentary-making and recycled materials on display. There will also be entertainment, giveaways and refreshments. Newcastle Art Space will also open its annual Members & Tenants Exhibition.

There’s more great music at The Lass tonight, with Funkwit returning to the stage tonight.

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
