This week in Newcastle Fashion: The Bird House, Newcastle Fashion Week & ‘Death is Life’ Exhibition

The Bird House Grand Opening

On Sunday The Bird House finally opened its doors to share its eclectic creations with Newcastle! The Bird House is the product of the collaboration of four female artists, Madalyn Ward, Rachel Steel and Nat and Imogen Numeyer, all of which bring their own unique style, and brand, to the table. Arts Mad, by Madalyn Ward, “is inspired by the spiritual and botanical world with designs reflective of linear and abstracted illustrations and paintings symbolic of cultural motifs”, while Steel’s Lady Land Studios, is inspired by “vintage dress patterns, vintage objects and intricately designed rice paper, which are utilised in creating a series of original jewellery pieces, including, glass pendants and earrings”, and Nat and Imogen Numeyer find inspiration for Nat & Mim’s in everything vintage and second hand, they “up-cycle already made clothing and vintage material into wearable art, including an accessory range of textile based brooches”.

The Bird House was created to share the women’s creative handmade and innovative works of art, clothing and jewellery with Newcastle and the world.

Newcastle Fashion Week Calls for Volunteers and Models

Volunteer applications are now open! Newcastle Fashion Week relies on the work of volunteers to help run the event, so with promises of valuable experience, treasured insider knowledge and the fulfillment of dreams, it’s no wonder why so many people apply to be lucky ones selected! If you are one of those tall, beautiful people who gets excited about the idea of strutting down a runway then audition to model for Newcastle Fashion Week! As well as having a great time, volunteering your face and body to this charity event will help bulk out the resume for that career in fashion you may be contemplating! ‘Death is Life’ : A group exhibition hosted by Before It Began

‘Death is Life’ is an exhibition inspired by the Mexican holiday ‘Dia de los Muertos’, celebrating the lives of deceased love ones. Local boutique Before It Began will play host to a number of designers and artists for the exhibition, pieces which have all been designed to reflect the celebration of life, death and art.

The exhibition will take place on Friday, 22 July, from 6-9pm at Before It Began on Darby St, Cooks Hill. The event will feature music by The Si Claros, a fashion show showcasing custom designs from emerging local and Australian designers, and 12 artists displaying their pieces.

Before It Began is a fashion & art studio run by Jzhonnie Bechet Holloway & Bonnie Grace Dwyer, and exists as a collaboration of their talents in fashion, art and photography.

Natalie is a PhD student studying at the University of Newcastle. She is researching the influences that shape the creative content of advertisements. Natalie aspires to be part of a creative team at a successful advertising agency one day soon. She loves photography, fashion and taking her dogs swimming at the beach.
