This Week in Newcastle: Euro-Pop, Flying Circus & A New Venue for Newcastle
As we all get back in to the swing of things following the silly season, it doesn’t mean no more going out & having fun! There’s still lots to see & do around Newcastle. Here’s a guide to some of this week’s local gigs & events…
Saturday, 7 January
Something for the kids: the final installment of the Summer in Town festival series (run by Livesites) is a Flying Circus at Birdwood Park. Circus Avalon will be entertaining from 9 - 11am today & tomorrow, providing a combination of wow-factor aerial amazements & circus workshops. There will also be shows in Pacific Park on January 11 & 12, and best of all - it’s free!
Another Saturday night at The Lass. Tonight featuring James Thomson, The Dennis Boys and the Australian Beef Week Show.
Wednesday, 11 January
Catch some local & touring talent at Lizottes Newcastle’s Live & Local tonight. This week the showcase features Luke Watt, Nigel Wearne and The Stillsons. The night is presented by Reverb Street Press and tickets are $16, with food & drinks also available for purchase. More info & tickets.
Don’t miss the grand opening of Newcastle’s newest venue tonight! Chino’s Bar, located on the Denison St side of The Cambridge Hotel on Hunter St (formerly The Red Bar) will open its doors officially tonight, kicking off with a performance by Wollongong duo Mother & Son supported by Vulture Culture. Thursday, 12 January
Get a healthy dose of local jazz at Jazz Factory tonight at The Great Northern Hotel. See (or be one) locals join in a fantastic house band led by Adam Ferrier and vote for your favourite! Entry is free & kick off is 7:30pm.
Friday, 13 January
Newcastle bands Bats & Battleships and I Am The Agent will be releasing new loud & feedback laden EPs simultaneously tonight at The Cambridge. They’ll be supported by Maids and tickets are $10 + booking fee. More info & tickets.
Saturday, 14 January
Take advantage of the balmy Summer nights and head along to Cinema Under The Stars at King Edward Park tonight. Entry is free so gather your friends & family, stock a picnic basket and secure yourselves a spot to watch Rio (PG). Gates open at 6:30pm and the movie starts at around 8pm.
If you fancy getting your Euro-pop on tonight instead, don’t miss The Vengaboys in action at Newcastle Panthers. They’re performing alongside The Herbs, Hot Cop & Ruggs as part of the Happy Endings series (replacing the New Beginnings music festival). There’s sure to be some creative dance moves & lots of laughs as well as inevitable sing-alongs (you know that you know the words to Boom Boom Boom Boom). Pre-sale tickets are available for $35 + booking fee. The show is over 18s and doors open at 7:30pm.
There’s another Happy Endings gig on at Level One at Newcastle Leagues Club tonight featuring Hungry Kids of Hungary, Bleeding Knees Club, Nantes, Toucan & Millions. Pre-sale tickets are available for $25 + booking fee. The show is over 18s and doors open at 7:30pm.
Sunday, 15 January
If you didn’t make it along to the Nobby’s Lighthouse open days in 2011, you’ll be pleased to hear that throughout 2012 this Newcastle icon will be accessible to the public on the first & third Sundays of each month (today is 3rd Sunday of January, so if you’re looking for something to do, why not check it out!). It’s open 10am - 4pm and the best place to park is Nobby’s Beach car park.
