If this beautiful Spring weather keeps up, it’s set to be a great weekend to get out and about. Luckily, there’s plenty happening so here a few of the top picks around town for the week…

Friday, 4 November

Pete Murray comes to Newcastle tonight, performing tracks from his new album Blue Sky Blue. ‘The Free Tour’ is Murray’s first for two years and will see a new band, new songs yet the same dynamic live performance the man from Byron Bay is known for. The gig at Newcastle Panthers has a few tickets left so check out Moshtix for more details.

With their fusion of jazz, blues and rock, local lads The Hatty Fatners are performing tonight at the Lass O’Gowrie Hotel In Wickham. Also playing tonight at the Lass are Zen & The Art and Matt Graham. For a little taste of The Hatty Fatners, visit them on Triple J Unearthed.

Saturday, 5 November

The Olive Tree Markets are on again this Saturday, so pack your purse and head along to check out some great local artisan wares. The markets take place at The Junction Public School between 9am – 3pm and for more details, visit their website.

The Bitter and Twisted International Boutique Beer Festival is back again for another year and will be held both today and tomorrow at the old Maitland Gaol. The historic site will be transformed into a beer lovers paradise with slightly twisted entertainment, food, art, regional produce anf of course, lots and lots of beer. Beer tastings, beer masterclasses, home brewing tips, the list goes on! The Festival runs from 10am-6pm both Saturday and Sunday so for more info, visit the Festival website.

If you’re after a bit of live music for your Saturday night, get along to the Cambridge Hotel to see the Crooked Fiddle Band. Described as “Australian chainsaw folk”, they’ll be sure to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Combing stunning musicianship with infectious rhythm and energy, they’ll hit the stage at 8pm. Sunday, 6 November

For something a little different, head down to the skatepark at Newcastle Beach this afternoon to catch some of the nations leading BMX tricksters battle it out for the Andrew Leggett Trophy. With lots of prizes, giveaways and a free BBQ, sit back and watch the pros put on one hell of a show. The event runs from 1pm-8pm, entry is free and there will even be an after party event held at the King Street Hotel.

If that isn’t for you, try the Depot on Beaumont this afternoon for their monthly Sunday Sessions. Relax with tapas, drinks and chilled out tunes, a perfect way to wend your weekend. 4pm til late.

If you happen to be down in Sydney for the day and you’re wanting a little taste of the Hunter, get down to Balmoral Beach for Hunter Valley Uncorked. The event features some of our regions top winemakers and restauranteurs showcasing the best of what the Hunter Valley has to offer. Good food and good wine, all in a beautiful seaside setting. It sounds like a winner to me! Best of all, entry is free so for more details, visit their website.

Monday, 7 November

The Roost Creative on Hunter Street have put the call out for local artists to get involved in an upcoming exhibition. Entitled Two Tone, the guys at Roost are looking for artworks/designs using two colours/tones achieved through either screenprinting, lino-cutting, letterpressing, stenciling or just plain printing. Tuesday, 8 November

Lizotte’s at Lambton has something interesting on tonight. Out There sees Bachelor of Music students from the University of Newcastle present a showcase of pop, contemporary and jazz music. Get along to hear the fresh new sounds of the stars of the future. Wednesday, 9 November

Motherhood The Musical, a hilarious, musical journey through the lives of four women is on tonight at the Civic Theatre. Thursday, 10 November

Sydney 4 piece Faker are back on tour and come to Newcastle tonight to play material from their brand new album Get Loved. This is their first album for three years and by far the bands most personal to date. Playing at the Cambridge Hotel, the boys will kick things off at 8pm.
