Newcastle Boasts Best Breakfasts
The Spaniards perfected tapas and the Americans may lay claim to the super-sized meal, but if there’s one country that can boast best brekkies, it has to be Australia; and with Newcastle home to more than a handful of cafes and restaurants serving treats ideal for nursing the nastiest of hangovers, the art of weekend “breakfasting” has become a practiced pastime of many.
Walking down Darby Street at 9am on a Saturday or Sunday morning lay testament to just how dedicated Novocastrians are to the most important meal of the day. As the wait grows for tables in cafés around the city, many head to a tried and true favourite, Goldberg’s. Home to spaghetti on toast and the angry birds in the back courtyard that thieve on your eggs benedict while you’re at the toilet, Goldberg’s is one of Darby’s longest-standing roadside eateries and is one of the first restaurants to fill up for breakfast on the weekends.
If its quantity you’re after then the newly-renovated Longbench is sure to be a winner, with their massive plates of eggs on toast. Luckily there’s a quiet courtyard that lends itself to lounging for as long as it may take to finish eating and catching up on last night’s dirt.
Darby Street has everything a hungover heart could possibly desire, but if it’s a sweet tooth that must be curbed, Suspension on Beaumont or Snow Patisserie in the Junction can put a serious cap on it. The rows and rows of confectionery treats in Snow allow breakfast-teers to pick their poison while the gooey-centred muffins at Suspension give way for momentary apex.
Weekend breakfasting also lends itself to catch ups with old mates long-removed, and you’ll find coffee shops, citywide, are packed with friends united by the search for great coffee.
A newbie to Newcastle, Glee Coffee Roasters on Darby definitely knows what matters in the morning with their to-the-point set up and the most delicious coffee. Greeted by the Shaft soundtrack (on vinyl!) coolly playing in the background, Glee baristas make you feel like family while providing a scrumptious coffee to wash down their delicious mini waffles.
Sundays are Newcastle’s best breakfasting days, as they tend to be slower, more relaxed. A Sunday favourite for brunch and coffee is One Penny Black, who temporarily shut their doors on Sundays (probably much to the relief of their staff) but have since re-opened by popular demand. Spending the morning in One Penny Black is like spending time in your cool Aunty Rose’s house. There’s a hodgepodge of seating with footstools, re-purposed picture frames and magazines to really settle in while sipping on the delightfully strong coffee.
While it is difficult to find one word describing the atmosphere around Newcastle during the early weekend hours, dynamic generally sums it up. Whether a morning person or not, and no matter your vice – a greasy big brekkie, muesli and yoghurt, or a simple strong brew - those around Newcastle truly enjoy a good breakfast and luckily the city of Newcastle can put its menus where its mouth is.
Where are you favourite places for a weekend breakfast?
Had breakfast at estabar yesterday and was very impressed. The food was delicious and well-priced, and you couldn’t ask for a better view on a sunny day.
Sounds like a lovely morning Prue!
