Newcastle Art Space and The Black Box Theatre Present: 3 Dimen3ions & Afghan Star

Newcastle in July is proving to be an art and culture filled month this year, take a look at the latest insider goings-on!

3 Dimen3ions @ Newcastle Art Space

The 3 Dimen3sions exhibition will be held in Newcastle Art Space is featuring paintings and drawings by artists Peter Lewis, David McBride and Josh McGregor. The three are very different people, yet their work has a lot in common, blending everyday images from the real world to create a parallel universe where nothing is mundane and anything is possible.

Peter Lewis has been exhibiting fine artist since 1975 and the Newcastle Herald’s editorial cartoonist since 1986. He told us “I’ve been scribbling since childhood, a habit that got me into trouble when I did it in school textbooks, but have been fortunate enough to make a living out of it. I like to make art into a personal adventure, combining elements of the natural world to make something new.”

Dave McBride has been a fine artist and educator since 1976 with several previous exhibitions under his belt. When asked about his work he said “Since childhood, I have been a “dreamer”. The intangible, the mysterious, the inexplicable, always fascinating. I have of late, been increasingly preoccupied with human connectivity to the physical environment and the phenomenon of mind and matter coexisting.”

Josh McGregor is an emerging fine artist from Newcastle with a passion for surrealism.  “I paint as a therapy, putting a piece of myself in my work to create a narrative. I leave it open to the viewer to find their own story. Loss, love, truth and fakery and the need to connect are all common themes people go through. This is what I explore in my work.” Josh told us.

Afghan Star @ The Black Box Theatre

The Black Box Theatre will be showcasing Afghan Star this July. The story traces 4 contestants who have entered the Afghan version of ‘Australian Idol.’ In addition to being highly entertaining, it is a rich account of the complexities currently facing the country, and in particular, women. It contains powerful sub-texts around themes such as mass citizen engagement and mobilisation. There will also be information on the Newcastle Amnesty International group and how you can be involved.

Monthly meetings will be held in Studio 10, Newcastle Community Arts Centre.
