Newcastle bands are a busy lot, and there’s a bunch pumping out new recordings at the moment… get your dose of new music and support local talent by checking them out!

Crystal Cove launch first official release

Crystal Cove have released their first official recording, capturing the relaxed & catchy pop rock melodies of the four songs they’ve written. You can check out the band and hear these 4 ditties by getting along to The Northern Star Hotel in Hamilton on Saturday, 23 July. Once there, you’ll be able to enjoy not only Crystal Cove, but the music of 5 local soloists: Brad Vincent, Rescue 90, Hawk Brooklyn, Landon Elliot River & Michael Ferfoglia. These guys will be offering up a great variety of music, from country through to folk-rock. Entry is just $5, tickets available at the door.

Bob Corbett & The Roo Grass Band recording new album

Bob Corbett has been a fixture on the local music scene for many years and the same can be said for the players that make up the Roo Grass Band. Bob, along with Dave Carter, Sue Carson & Rob Long have been in the studio to record a new album to follow their 2010 release, Silver Lining.

These guys always seem to be flat out touring, recording and gigging, and it’s paying off for them - they’ve currently got two of their music videos broadcasting nationally on the Country Music Channel and their tracks have been included on compilations including CMAA Independence Day, which features several Golden Guitar winners.

In the past, Bob Corbett has received nine 1233 ABC Music Awards including Best Country Song, The APRA & ABC Music Publishing Songwriter Recognition awards, Broadcasters Choice and the 1233 Tour support prize. Bob can also be seen performing with the popular Newcastle duo Loonatic Fringe, guitar quartet 24 Strings and on slide guitar with Mark Wells‘ band (2008 Road To Tamworth winner). He’s also an award-winning film maker (Best Film at The Newcastle Shootout 2000 & Best Film at The Newcastle Film Festival 2001). More recently he has directed several music videos that can currently be seen on CMC including Mark Wells’ Sly and The Roo Grass Band’s The Alpine Plunker and Mandolin.

Bob has just posted some photos taken in the studio on his new Facebook page. Check it out and ‘like’ him to stay up to date with the band & new album.

Local Singers to launch at Lizottes

This July will see two local singers take to the Lizottes Newcastle stage to launch their new albums.

First cab off the rank is Ashleigh Grace, who will launch her debut album on Friday, 22 July at the tender age of 17. She recorded the album at Newcastle’s Tommirock Studios and was recently interviewed by NBN ahead of the album’s release. Ashleigh is looking forward to heading to the USA later this year where she’ll get to record in some of Disney’s finest studios. Book tickets to her launch here (be quick, they’re just about sold out!) and stay up to date with her blossoming career via her website.

The following Wednesday, 27 July, it will be Kirsty Larkin‘s turn! The night will kick off with Eddie Williams before Kirsty gives the audience their dose of her refreshingly honest and cheeky stage presence. The local album launch is taking place following Kirsty’s performance at this year’s Tamworth Country Music Festival. Tickets are available here and you can check out her music here.

Zoe K & Gleny Rae take new albums to Melbourne

Local songstresses Zoe K & Gleny Rae Virus will pack up their bands and fly south for the Winter to launch their respective albums in Melbourne on Saturday, 6 August.

If you’ve been to a Zoe K & The Shadow Katz gig lately, you might already have a copy of her debut self-titled release in your hot little hands. If not, you can keep your eye on her Facebook page for upcoming gigs (including a support spot with Renee Geyer in September!) and pick one up there.

Gleny Rae has finally replied to all her fans who’ve been in touch as a result of her appearance on the SBS TV hit Go Back To Where You Came From (did you see it?) and is now ready to launch her latest album with her Tamworth Playboys, Beyond Horizontal. They’re taking it to the USA later in the year, but keep your eyes peeled for local gigs to snag a copy.

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
