Grease Guzzling Garage Surfabilly This Weekend In Newcastle: Mother & Son - Win Tickets!
Wollongong power-duo Mother & Son will bring their brand of garage surfabilly to The Cambridge this Saturday night, supporting Brothers Grim & Graveyard Train. It’s set to be a riotous evening of hip-shaking good times. We caught up with the boys ahead of the gig to find out a bit more about them & what they’ve been up to…
You guys describe yourselves as grease guzzling garage surfabilly. Who has influenced you musically to reach this sound?
The late Link Wray is always playing on both mine and Bodie Son’s car stereos. Not only did he invent the power chord but he made those fuzzy surf tones that keep you warm at night. We both just listen to a lot of 80′s garage guitar bands such as the Cramps & Flat Duo Jets, they both feed our sound. But essentially we both just dig real rock ‘n’ roll and try to explore that. If it doesn’t rock, then it doesn’t roll.
Earlier this year you held a European Tour Fundraising Tour. How did that go? What’s the plan for the European tour?
The fundraising tour went super well. We did the East Coast then back to Melb (again). I think this was our tenth trip to Melbourne. There’s def’ some love for M&S down there. Mind you our shows in Brisbane are always fun. Managed to get paid so that’s always a bonus, ha.
Yeah, the dates for Europe are getting booked now and it looks like a May/June trip to France, Spain & German will happen in 2012. Feeling pretty excited.
Speaking of Melbourne, you’ve just returned from the Chopped Rod Festival down there. What were the highlights?
The festival was pure awesome and we aren’t even into cars. I’d have to say the highlight was being able to play with our favourite bands Brothers Grim, 6ftHick, Toot Toot Toots and LaMancha Negra. Not to mention the Tiki Bar and Saturday drags in some random person’s Dad’s 1970 Chevy.
You’ve played in Newcastle before as part of Dirty Decadence at Silk. What did you get up to when you were in town? Any highlights?
Oh that was a great night, plenty of booze and plenty of people dancing which is the perfect scenario for us. Good times. We had to continue the trip North as we were booked to play Brissy the next night. So unfortunately we pretty much legged it in the van for another few hours, slept in the van on the side of a new highway and woke up to road workers making a racket at 6am.
What makes you laugh?
Shane Warne and Liz Hurley!
