Designers it’s time to start your engines and get your eyes on the prize! Newcastle’s Frock On! Fashion Design Competition is now open for entries!

Fresh off the back of the Face of Frock On! modelling competition, the design component of the program is under way. If you’re an aspiring designer wanting to showcase your talent, then this part is definitely for you!

The runway show scheduled for Saturday 3 September, 2011, at Newcastle City Hall provides an opportunity for designers to show off their skills, have a great time and win cash and prizes. There are seven categories providing an opportunity for designers to express their originality and show innovative new designs:

  • Cocktail: create something suitable to wear to a VIP cocktail party.
  • Millinery: here’s where you need to present a fashionable hat and show off your design & workmanship.
  • Red Carpet: make something that would look great in Hollywood.
  • Swimwear & Beachwear: design & wearability will win here.
  • Recycled Threads: innovation & wearbility are the key to this category.
  • Street Wear: present fashionable casual clothing for the urban scene.

Categories are $10 each entry (piece) & prizes for each category range from $500 - $1,500.

Designers also have the opportunity to win a Designer of the Year award and there is the popular HSC Encouragement Award for HSC students using Frock On! Newcastle to display their HSC textiles major works. Last year’s Designer of the Year was Carlos Bouman, a student of the Sydney Institute’s Fashion Design Studio.

All garments must be received by 24 August 2011. Contact Frock On! via email for more information.

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
