Cool Job in Newcastle - Designer for Pasha Bulker Production
Remember the wondrous disaster that was the grounding of the Pasha Bulker? I have a friend who lived opposite the Cowrie Hole at the time, and he once told me he sat up in bed, peered out his window and thought, “Oh, there is a ship in my back yard”. The scene caused worldwide coverage of our very own Newcastle, and us Novocastrians flocked like sea gulls to the great hot chip that was the Pasha Bulker to peer awe-struck at the tanker, caught immovably on Nobby’s Beach.
In 2012, five years since the event, Newcastle’s Tantrum Theatre in partnership with the ATYP are creating a production called ‘Grounded’ – a celebration of Newcastle and a dramatic tale of the day the Pasha came to stay. Tantrum and ATYP have co-commissioned one of Australia’s leading playwrights, Alana Valentine, to write the script.
Fancy yourself a steady hand with a paintbrush? The theatre is currently seeking expressions of interest from designers or visual artists to undertake the role of Designer for the production. Working closely with the director, the designer of this exciting production will be given the opportunity to create a world on stage that represents this iconic Newcastle landscape. Previous designing or accredited visual arts experience is required, and a designer’s fee will be paid for the position.
Rehearsals will begin in January 2012, and the performance will be held both at the Playhouse in Newcastle and the ATYP Wharf Theatre in Sydney come May 2012.
To apply, email a cover letter and CV to Toni Main. Expressions of interest must be submitted by 5.00pm 10 November 2011. For further information, contact the Tantrum office on (02) 4929 7279.
