#1: “No Cows” Groovin the Moo T-Shirt Design Competition. Cattleyard Promotions, creators of regional music festival bonanza Groovin the Moo, are calling for artists and designers to submit artwork for the 2011 GTM music festival t-shirt. After a plethora of bovine-inspired entries in 2010, there’s a new rule: NO COWS! Apart from that, it’s all up to you, you just need to make sure that the letters GTM are in there somewhere. The designs will be judged by 20-year-veteran-Mambo-designer Paul McNeill, Alter Studio founders Jonathan Wallace & Dan Whitford & The Jezabels. Entries are now open and will close at 5pm on 21 March 2011. More info.

#2: UoN Design Club. Heading back to uni? The University of Newcastle Design Club gives members the opportunity to compete in a number of competitions each year. Membership is cheap as chips ($5) and is open to all staff & students of the University. Comps last year included Smack Down - a tournament of digital illustration skill, speed and fun! This meeting of the mouses (mice?) usually takes place on the Wednesday night in the fourth week of each semester.  The AGM will take place on Thursday, 3 March at 12pm in the Visual Communication Design Honours Studio, so go along and sign up and be part of the planning process… there’s free food too. More info.

#4: Belmont 16s Photography Club. Belmont 16s Photography Club has enough photo competitions to keep you snapping away the whole year through. These include monthly club competitions, Image of the Year, and well as other larger ones. More info.

#4: Logo Designs. Designed your shirt and feeling like you’re on a roll? Why not take a look at 99 Designs’ logo competitions. Basically, businesses post a brief, designers get creative and submit their work & if it gets picked, you get paid. More info.

#5: Intrepid Travel Photography Competition. A local whose done some travel lately? Or maybe you’re visiting Newcastle? Intrepid & Lonely Planet invite travellers from all over the world to submit your favourite travel snaps. The comp closes on 30 June each year - if you miss it, your entry goes in the following year’s competition. There are heaps of prizes, with the overall winner getting a $3000 Intrepid group travel trip & a Lonely Planet book pack. More info.

#6: 2011 Kodak Salon: The Kodak Salon is an opportunity to show your photography work in a high profile exhibition and win some of the $16,000 worth of prizes on offer. Digital media, portraits, “most adventurous”, best print, best use of light, best environmental shot are just some of the awards on offer. Entries close 18 March. More info.

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
