Coco Monde Chocolateria: Newcastle’s Sweetest New Destination

Newcastle Chocolateria - Coco Monde

A sneak peek at the tasty treats made by the team at Coco Monde Chocolateria

I’ve had a fascination with chocolate ever since I first watched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as a young child. You can imagine my excitement upon hearing that a new cafe on Darby Street might just be the place to quell that addiction of mine. Coco Monde, billed as an innovative chocolate cafe, is most certainly a sight to behold for Newcastle’s chocolate lovers like myself.

Firstly, a few chocolate facts that might help to convince you that having that extra truffle when you are at Coco Monde might not be such a bad thing:

  • Actress Katherine Hepburn was a fellow chocoholic and confessed to eating up to 1 pound of chocolate per day. She died at age 96.
  • A bar of chocolate contains more calcium, protein and vitamin B2 than a banana does.
  • Dark chocolate is an aid in lowering cholesterol levels as well as heart disease.

Not only is Coco Monde a chocolate haven, it also has an extensive menu of breakfast, lunch and light snacks that offer both chocolate treats as well as alternative options to those not as chocolate inclined as myself.

With all of their delicious creations made on-site, the cafe is the only one of its kind in Newcastle. Pralines, truffles, cakes, gateaux and other delicious delights are made daily and customers have the choice to either dine in, take away or have their purchase gift wrapped for that special someone.

I thought it was essential that I did a bit of ‘product testing’ and decided to try an assortment of Coco Monde’s house made pralines. With some pretty different flavour selections on offer such as Earl Grey, Green Tea, Creamy Coconut, Mojito, Caramelised Macadamia and Pistachio, I was in heaven. The chocolates are velvety and full of flavour, made using Belgian and Swiss couverture products. All in all, there are 32 decadent flavours to choose from and can be purchased either individually or in packs of three, six, 12 or 20.

The cafe will bring out the Willy Wonka in all those who step through the door. With a chic interior that has plenty of tables and an outdoor eating area, it would be quite easy to just stare at the chocolate filled cabinets for hours. With Coco Monde being a new addition to the Darby Street strip, I observed that people were doing exactly that; staring in awe of the chocolaty delights. Perhaps they were after a ‘golden ticket’.

Coco Monde is open from 8am-10pm Monday through Thursday. 8am-11pm on Friday’s and Saturday’s. 8am-10pm on Sunday’s.

Head in to 80 Darby Street, Newcastle 2300, call on (02) 4023 0860 and check out their website and Facebook for more info.

Very well put together and very articulate, unfortunately even though I love chocolate it does not love me of late,as every time I eat a piece, I get a fit of the uncontrollable sneezes, hence cannot eat choclate or suffer the consequences.
