Arty Things To See & Do In Newcastle This Week
There are a few good reasons to get out and explore the Newcastle arts scene this week and here are a few of the highlights…
Children by John Maitland
Showing at the Cooks Hill Galleries, John Maitland’s Children endeavours to avoid emotion whilst focusing solely on the personality. He has done this through a series of paintings that depict his own children and grandchildren. Using bold colours that match perfectly with the idea of the child, Maitland combines these with his trademark ‘unfinished’ look to put forward a collection that is well worth checking out.
The Gallery is open Monday-Saturday between 11am-6pm as well as Sunday’s between 2pm-6pm. Check out their website for more details.
Newcastle Art Gallery
Apologies - please note that the Newcastle Art Gallery, along with the Library, will be closed indefinitely. In the wake of protests regarding the removal of the Laman St figs, security fencing has been increased, blocking access to both facilities.
Two exhibitions at the Newcastle Art Gallery just might catch your eye. Norman Lloyd’s Another Life is an exploration of the Australian landscape, through the brush of one of Australia’s largely forgotten artists. Predominately oils on canvas, the exhibition runs until 27 November.
Drawing from the gallery’s own collection Saving Face explores the notion of ‘portratuire’ and its various interpretations over recent years. Featuring works from artists such as Brett Whitely, the exhibition runs until 13 November.
And for the kids, Artcart is again being conducted on 15 October, starting at 10.30am. Running for two hours, the popular event gives kids the chance to take part in various hands-on activities and make some of their own art. Bookings aren’t required but be sure to take a look at their website for more details.
Student art at Watt Space Gallery
