Art Exhibitions in Newcastle This Week: Vintage & Students

Vintage Dream at Newcastle ARTHive

There’s a few good reasons to get out and check out what’s happening on the local art scene this week…

A Vintage Dream

The first is an eclectic photography exhibition at ARThive Gallery. A Vintage Dream will have its opening night this Friday and shows off the combined forces of local photographers Shana Dennis and Karen Kennedy. Using long exposures, the pair has brought together a series of shots that have a distinctively vintage, ethereal feel about them.

The night will include performances from Bahirah Bellydance as well as nibbles, drinks and plenty of vintage-inspired conversation. ARThive are encouraging anyone wishing to come along to the exhibition to dress in their finest, quirky vintage outfits to take full advantage of the nights theme.

Students On Show

The first of two end of year exhibitions for Newcastle Art School first year diploma students begins today. It runs until Friday and features painting, printmaking, photography, drawing & sculpture. Head along to the Front Room Gallery at 582 – 608 Hunter St, Newcastle West, between 11am - 5pm to check them out.

Newcastle Region Art Gallery Name Change

In other news, Newcastle City Council has endorsed that the Newcastle Region Art Gallery change its name to Newcastle Art Gallery. As reported in The Newcastle Herald, the Council put forward that the “gallery’s name was misleading, often incorrectly stated, grammatically clumsy and did not reflect the national importance of its $70 million collection”.

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
