Absence: Exhibition of new work by international artists Braddon Snape and Joshua White
Internationally recognised artists, Braddon Snape and Joshua White, have returned to their hometown of Newcastle presenting their latest exhibition, Absence. The pair most recently exhibited together in Sydney after returning from international projects in Seoul, Korea and the Netherlands.
At twenty-five, Joshua White has exhibited internationally at The University of Utrecht, Netherlands and contributed to over fifteen solo and group exhibitions in Newcastle, Melbourne and Sydney. In his recent work White combines two sensory elements, portrait paintings of musicians in the midst of playing their instruments paired with individual soundscapes, to highlight our primordial origins. As explained by White, “Combining these two sensory components comments on the simple fact that even within the most intellectual and complex of tasks like playing an instrument, basic human instinct is where it is all derived from.”
In an usual turn, Braddon Snape has detracted from the large-scale, minimalist abstract works that he is known for, as seen at Sculpture by the Sea, and internationally at his recent residency at the International Sculpture Festa in Seoul, Korea. Ironically for this exhibition, Absense, Snape has introduced figures into his otherwise minimalist work. Snape comments, “It is the absence of a complete narrative that is the strength of these works…….the unknown….…the unexplained…….the questions posed…….the space to muse.”
