A Pop-Up Bar in Newcastle?
That right, last Thursday night saw the Newcastle CBD a little livelier than usual with a Pop-Up bar being created for one night only in the Newcastle City Business Centre.
The night was hosted by Matthew Endacott in an effort to convey his message and gain support for the push to streamline the small bar application process with . The event, while short lived, provided an opportunity for people to meet and make connections with other people who are keen to get involved and and support mature alternative’s to the sometimes rough pub and nightclub scene that Newcastle seems to be infamous for.
Matt explained that one of the aims of this project, was to make Newcastle safe again. Reclaiming the CBD from the destructive, abusive and violent crowds that have given this city such a bad reputation. Matt spoke of wanting to encourage people that leave their 9 - 5 jobs in the city or the Honeysuckle districts, to stay around the area to catch up with friends, have a glass of locally produced wine and take in some of the beautiful history and architecture that is all around.
It’s hoped that if these sensible and respectful people are around the CBD more often they will serve as role models and create a new safer feel in the area. As the number of small bars increase, local retailers and restaurant owners should also stand to benefit from the increased foot traffic and development in the area.
The need to support the few small bars that we currently have such as Longworth House, Bar Petite, and the soon to be open Terrace Bar is vital to the success of this cause. Without the support from the people, it may be a long time before Newcastle’s CBD can reclaim some of its former glory.
The best news in that you can still help by joining 4,000 other people who have already supported the petition here. Keep in touch with the Newcastle Small Bars Facebook page too.
