Friday, 21 January: Forget 3D, take the family out to an open air movie marathon as part of Maitland City Library’s ‘Summer Night Flicks’ film festival. Held at Maitland Gaol, tickets $10 for all 3 movies (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Moon, Alien) or $5 per movie. More info.

Saturday, 22 January: Puta Madre Brothers (The world’s biggest one-man-band band!) + La Mancha Negra (Syd) + Mojo Juju (Melb) at The Great Northern Hotel from 9pm. $12 entry. The Puta Madre Brothers are fresh from shows at the Meredith & Falls Festival. Described as an overfilled taco of irresistible mariachi, rock en roll and Detroit soul music played with three drumsets and three guitars by three mexicano-wanna-be’s, they’re definitely worth a look in. Tuesday, 25 January & Wednesday, 26 January: For something on the aquatic side, the 25th will see the Harbour light up with the Harbour Lights Boat Parade, and the foreshore busy with activity, including stalls, rides and fireworks (9pm). Australia Day doubles as the National Maritime Festival where you can catch ski racing, tug ballet, tours, boat building competitions, stalls, RAAF aerobatic displays & more. More info.
JUST ADDED! Wednesday, 26 January: The Pillow Book at the Playhouse. Written by Linden Mullard and based on a Japanese literature classic, this play encapsulates themes of love, betrayal, imperial power and privilege. More info
Wednesday, 26 January: FIESTA 2011! If you’re looking for something different to do on Australia day than the usual pub crawl, Fiesta is a multicultural world music celebration that includes entertainment from a variety of local ethnic groups, multicultural food and performances from local musicians.
